“This incident is deeply disturbing. The actions of the involved police officers in Memphis are shocking and reprehensible. They have been justly fired and criminally charged for the death of Mr. Nichols. I unequivocally condemn the actions of the involved officers that collectively acted contrary to everything we compassionately stand for. On behalf of the members of the St. Thomas Police Service, our thoughts go out to the Nichols family, friends and the community. The STPS will continue to collaborate, through open dialogue and action, to better understand and serve without bias. We are committed to improving collaboration on matters of diversity and inter-cultural relations. We are dedicated to fostering organizational progression through inclusion and respect for the community that we serve. We are committed to confronting racial injustices and to stand with our racialized communities in bringing an end to all types of racism. Our community’s willingness to trust the police depends on their belief that our actions represent their values. Everyone in our community has a right to be safe and feel safe.”
