STPS Media Release – Sunday, March 22nd.

We attended a retail store located on Wellington Street regarding a theft. The suspect entered the store and removed a security set off of the shelf and left the store triggering the security sensors. The suspect was spoken to by a store employee in the parking lot and fled the area. This remains under investigation. Ref# ST26004777

A fire was lit in a dumpster at a property on Ross Street. Officers were able to identify the suspect through surveillance footage, a 37-year-old St. Thomas resident. This suspect has been arrested and charged with one count of arson – damage to property and released with a future court date and conditions. The fire was contained to the dumpster and no injuries were sustained as a result of the fire. St. Thomas Fire Dept attended and suppressed the blaze. Ref# ST26004779

We conducted a R.I.D.E. program in the area of Ross St at Hemlock St. Ninety drivers were checked for any drug or alcohol consumption resulting in no charges. Ref# ST26004801

Protecting yourself from fraud

In an ongoing effort to help protect the residents of St. Thomas from falling victim to online scams and fraud, the St. Thomas Police Service would like to remind the community on ways to protect yourself and things to consider while online:

  • Always get a second opinion from family or friends regarding the situation
  • No employer will reach out to you through apps like Whats App or Telegram
  • No employer will ever pay you in crypto currency
  • No employer will ask you to invest your own money

Use the Canadian Anti- Fraud Centre as a resource to familiarize yourself with current scams and additional ways to protect yourself
