Two arrested after downtown assault

Two St. Thomas residents have been arrested after an employee of a church was assaulted.

On Monday September 18th 2023, St. Thomas police were called to a downtown address by the victim who reported being assaulted after attempting to move along two unwanted parties who were loitering on the property.

The two individuals refused to leave and became combative. The victim was spat on and then lunged at, threatened and punched before  falling to the ground as the altercation escalated. An employee at a neighbouring business heard the altercation and came to separate the involved parties at which time the suspects fled the area. The victim managed to take photos of the individuals and provided them to police.

St. Thomas police were able to identify the individuals responsible for the assault and at approximately 6:20 p.m. police were called to the plaza at First and Elm after receiving a complaint of a person waving around a large knife in the parking lot of the plaza.

Upon arrival, 20 year old Nicolas Derbowka and 30 year old Shaylee Murphy, the parties identified as the individuals responsible for the assault earlier that day were located.

As a result:

Shaylee Murphy has been charged with one count of Assault. She was arrested and transported to police headquarters where she was processed and released on an undertaking with a future court date.

Nicolas Derbowka has been charged with one count Assault, one count Uttering Threats – Cause death or bodily harm and one count Failure to Comply with Probation Order. He was arrested and transported to police headquarters where he was processed and held for a court appearance.

As a result of the court appearance, Derbowka was remanded into custody.
