The Future of Crime Prevention: Building a Safer St. Thomas Together
As Crime Prevention Week 2024 draws to a close, the St. Thomas Police Service reflects on the future of crime prevention, extending an open invitation to residents, businesses, and community partners to join in our ongoing commitment to safety. By working together, we can build a future where everyone plays an active role in creating a secure, resilient community.
This year’s theme, “Awareness in Action: Keeping Ontario Safe Together,” has underscored the importance of a collective approach to crime prevention. Throughout the week, the St. Thomas Police Service highlighted numerous initiatives—ranging from auto theft prevention to support for victims of intimate partner violence—all aimed at empowering the public with knowledge and resources to make St. Thomas a safer place.
Vision for the Future
Chief Marc Roskamp envisions a St. Thomas where every individual feel empowered to contribute to a crime-free community. “The future of crime prevention lies not only with police but with every member of our community,” said Chief Roskamp. “A safer future means that residents, business owners, and police work together to prevent crime before it starts. Our strength lies in the power of our collective commitment.”
To further support this collaborative vision, the St. Thomas Police Service encourages residents to consider the following:
- Get Involved: Attend local safety events and become an active participant in community safety.
- Stay Informed: Follow the St. Thomas Police Service on our social media platforms and to stay in the loop of crime prevention resources, alerts, and tips.
- Be Proactive: Implement practical safety measures in your home, workplace, and public spaces, from security systems to lighting improvements.
Chief Roskamp emphasized, “Crime prevention is about creating lasting connections—between police and the community, among neighbors, and within local organizations”
