STPS Media Release- December 29th 2023

Assault with a weapon:

In the evening hours of December 27th 2023, a male party was walking on the old train tracks in the east end of the city when he was assaulted by four unknown individuals. The victim was unable to identify anyone involved however through police investigation it is believed this is not a random assault. Police are reviewing video in the area in an attempt to identify the involved parties. (ST23022593)

Break and Enter:

In the morning hours of December 28th 2023, police responded to break and enter to a commercial building in the downtown core. It was determined that the suspects made entry to the building through an unlocked door before causing damage inside the business. Police continue to investigate (ST23022609)

Theft:

On the 22nd of December 2023, several transactions were made using stolen debit card which was stolen from a patron and the Back Alley. The victim noticed the fraudulent transactions several days later while checking their online banking, and subsequently reported it to police. Police continue to investigate. (ST23022610)

Vehicle Entry:

Sometime between December 27th and December 28th an unlocked vehicle was entered at an Alma Street address. The vehicle was rummaged through the owners wallet was taken, however it was located a short distance from the residence. All contents remained in the wallet except a small amount of cash. This occurrence remains under investigation (ST23022622)

Theft:

Police are investigating the theft $4000 worth of gaming consoles and accessories from Shoppers Drug Mart. The occurred earlier in December but was not discovered until the 28th of December 2023. Police are reviewing all available video and continue to investigate (ST23022623)

Vehicle Entry:

On the 28th of December 2023, police investigated a vehicle entry at a Metcalfe Street residence. The complainant’s unlocked vehicle was entered and rummaged through however thankfully nothing was stolen. (ST23022627)

Theft:

Police are investigating a theft from Peavey Mart that occurred on the 28th of December 2023. An unknown person fled the store with a coat which they failed to pay for. Surveillance video has been obtained and police continue to investigate. (ST23022628)

Mischief:

Police are investigating damage caused to a vehicle while parked at the Elgin General Hospital. On the 27th of December 2023, an unknown person ripped the rear wiper blade off a vehicle and used to scratch the paint of the vehicle. Police are reviewing all available surveillance video and continue to investigate. (ST23022636)

Fail to Stop:

On the 29th of December 2023, staff at a downtown restaurant alerted police to a possible impaired driver. Police were able to locate the vehicle involved a short distance away and attempted to stop the vehicle by activating emergency lights and sirens. The vehicle was followed for a short distance however the driver failed to stop for police. Due to public safety concerns police stopped following when it became apparent the drive would not stop. Police are making every attempt to identify the driver and continue to investigate. (ST23022660)
