St. Thomas Police Service Shares Halloween Safety Reminders

St. Thomas, ON Thursday October 30th 2025

As the community prepares for a night of costumes, candy, and celebration, the St. Thomas Police Service is reminding everyone to keep safety top of mind this Halloween. Whether you’re trick-or-treating with little ones or celebrating with friends, a few simple precautions can help ensure a fun and safe evening for all.

Safety Tips for Trick-or-Treaters

Be Visible: Choose bright or reflective costumes, or add reflective tape to help trick-or-treaters be seen by drivers. Carrying a flashlight or glow stick is another great way to increase visibility after dark.

Stick Together: Travel in groups with family or friends. There’s safety in numbers, and groups are easier for drivers to spot.

Plan Ahead: Choose a familiar, well-lit route and remind children to use crosswalks and pedestrian signals. Avoid dark areas and never cross the road between parked vehicles.

Check Treats: Inspect all candy before eating and discard anything that appears opened or tampered with.

Home Safety: Keep walkways clear, turn on exterior lights, and secure pets to prevent accidental scares or injuries at the door.

Safety Reminders for Adults

Drive Sober: If your party plans include alcohol, arrange a safe ride home. Never drive impaired.

Slow Down: Expect more foot traffic in residential areas between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. Drive with extra caution and be prepared to stop suddenly.

Stay Alert: Avoid distractions and watch for children crossing streets or stepping off curbs unexpectedly.

Halloween is a time for fun and community spirit. By taking a few extra safety steps, we can help ensure everyone enjoys the evening responsibly.

From all of us at the St. Thomas Police Service have a safe and Happy Halloween!
