EXEMPTED (BROAD) RECORD CHECKS

 In January 2025, the Ontario government introduced a new type of police record check known as the Broad Record Check (BRC), aimed at enhancing the safety of children and young persons receiving services under the Child, Youth and Family Services Act (“CYFSA”).

If you are eligible to apply for a Broad Record Check, please print and complete the fillable PDF document, and submit in person at St. Thomas Police Service, 45 Caso Crossing.

If you do not have access to a printer, the Broad Record Check Application forms are available at the St. Thomas Police Station at 45 Caso Crossing.

Submitting your form in person

You will need to provide two pieces of valid government issued identification, one of which must have your name, photo, address, and signature. Acceptable forms of identification include:

  • Drivers Licence
  • Status Card
  • Government Employment Card
  • International Student Card
  • Age of Majority Card
  • Firearms Acquisition Certificate
  • Military Employment Card
  • Ontario Photo Card
  • Canadian Citizenship Card
  • Canadian National Institute for the Blind Card (CNIB)

Fee and Payment

The cost of a Broad Record Check is $100. We accept cash, debit, or VISA.

RECONSIDERATION FOR AN EXEMPTED RECORD CHECK

In accordance with the Police Record Check Reform Act (PRCRA 10.4 and O.Reg 348/18), the St. Thomas Police Service has implemented the following Reconsideration Process.

  1. A request for reconsideration must be made in writing no later than 45 days after receiving the record, unless, through no fault of their own, the individual was unable to make the request within the time period.
  2. A request for reconsideration may include written submissions in support of the request for reconsideration.
  3. A request for reconsideration may be made by electronic means that comply with the Electronic Commerce Act, 2000.

In reconsidering its determination, the St. Thomas Police will,

  • Apply the criteria set out in the Risk Assessment Form;
  • Apply the criteria set out in the Exempted Act;
  • Consider entries on the individuals exempted record check; and
  • Consider the individual’s written submissions.

The St. Thomas Police Service will provide the applicant with written notice of the reconsideration decision within 30 days of receipt of the request.
