Media Release Wednesday April 10th 2024

Impaired operation 

A 65 year old St. Thomas resident has been charged with impaired operation. On Tuesday April 9th 2024, officers were alerted by their automatic license plate reader (ALPR) of a vehicle travelling west bound on Talbot Street. Officers followed and observed the vehicle to be driving in a concerning manner and initiated a traffic stop. Through investigation, police determined the driver was impaired by alcohol. The individual was arrested and transported to police headquarters where testing results concluded the 65 year old to be in excess of 80mg of  alcohol in 100ml of blood. The St. Thomas resident has been charged with one count Impaired Operation 80plus and one count Drive with Unsealed Container as per the LLCA. The individual was processed and released on an undertaking with a future court date. ST24005633

Residential break and enter 

St. Thomas police are currently investigating a residential break and enter. On Tuesday April 9th 2024, officers on general patrol were made aware of a possible break and enter to a home on the southeast side of the city. Through investigation, police learned the home was being taken care of by family while the owner was out of the country. When attending the home on April 9th, damage to the front door  was observed and the door was wide open. Police are reviewing available CCTV as they continue to investigate. ST24005578

Commercial break and enter

St. Thomas police are currently investigating a commercial break and enter. Just before midnight on Tuesday April 9th 2024, STPS were contacted by the security company responsible for a building on Southwick Street. Police learned two unknown individuals had cut a hole through the fence on the perimeter of the property, gaining access to the commercial compound. The suspects had left the area prior to police arrival. Police are reviewing available CCTV as they continue to investigate. ST24005635

Warrant arrests

A 25 year St. Thomas resident has been arrested. On Tuesday April 9th 2024, officers were called in regards to an unwanted person in the backyard of a home on Centre Street. The person had left the area prior to police arrival but was located a short distance away by responding officers. The individual, known to police to be wanted on an outstanding warrant with our service stemming from an incident in December of 2023, was arrested and transported to the Elgin County Courthouse to attend court. A 34 year old St. Thomas resident, wanted by STPS for failing to comply with their release order has been arrested. On Tuesday April 9th 2024, the individual attended police headquarters to turn themselves in on the outstanding warrant. They were processed and released on an undertaking with a future court date. Two St. Thomas teens wanted by STPS for assault, have been arrested. Both individuals attended police headquarters to turn themselves in on the outstanding warrants after a physical altercation took place Monday. The teens, age 14 and 15 were processed and released on an undertaking with a future court date. ST24005581/5547/5604

A 68 year old St. Thomas resident has been arrested. On Tuesday April 9th 2024, officers on community patrol located the individual known to them to be wanted by our service on several charges dating back to a break and enter investigation from November 2023. The 68 year old was arrested and transported to the Elgin County Courthouse where they were remanded into custody pending a bail hearing. ST24005593/ST23018244

An 18 year old resident of Elgin County has been arrested. On Wednesday April 10th 2024, London Police notified STPS  that the teen was in their custody on the strength of our warrant. The 18 year old had been charged with one count of Assault and one count of  Mischief after an incident in St. Thomas in September of 2023. Officers attended London and transported the individual to St. Thomas police headquarters where they were processed and released on an undertaking with a future court date. ST24005637

Failure to comply 

A 31 year old St. Thomas resident has been arrested. On Wednesday April 10th 2024, officers were dealing with the individual on an unrelated matter when they became aware of an outstanding warrant for arrest held by Elgin OPP and a curfew. As a result, the 31 year old was arrested and charged with one count Failure to Comply with Release Order and transported to police headquarters. The individual was processed and OPP notified. Mischief

A slashed tire has been reported to police. On Tuesday April 9th 2024, officers were called in regards to the incident that occurred while the vehicle was parked in the 500 block of Talbot Street. CCTV cameras in the area are being reviewed as police investigate. ST24005587

Theft 

Approximately $3,000 of copper wire has been reported stolen. On Monday April 8th 2024, STPS were contacted by staff of facilities maintenance for the City of St. Thomas who wished to report that the wire had been stolen from the 600 block of Talbot Street from a contractor who was updating the street lights in the area. CCTV surveillance of the incident was captured and is being reviewed. ST24005603

A 32 year old St. Thomas resident has been arrested. On Monday April 8th 2024, officers were called to a retail store on Talbot Street to investigate a shoplifting incident that had just occurred. Upon arrival, police learned approximately $180 in groceries were stolen. Video surveillance captured the individual responsible entering a vehicle and leaving the area. The video captured the license plate of the vehicle and through investigation, police identified the person responsible and notified them that they had been charged with one count of Theft under $5,000. The 32 year old attended police headquarters where they were processed and released on an appearance notice. ST24005621
