Media Release Monday March 25th 2024

Assault Police 

A 28 year old St. Thomas resident has been arrested. On Sunday March 24th 2024, St. Thomas police were notified of the whereabouts of an individual wanted by our service on an outstanding warrant for Theft under $5000, Mischief, Failure to Comply with Release Order and Failure to Comply with Probation stemming from an incident earlier this month. The individual was located and advised of the charges. Upon arrest, the 28 year old became combative and attempted to strike and push the arresting officer. The 28 year old was transported to police headquarters where they were additionally charged with one count Assault a Peace Officer, one count Resist Peace Officer and one count of Fail to Comply with Probation. The St. Thomas resident was processed and held for a court appearance. ST24004623

Disqualified Driver 

A 47 year old St. Thomas resident has been arrested. On Sunday March 24th 2024, officers on community patrol observed the individual fail to stop at a marked stop sign while driving an e-bike. Police initiated a traffic stop and through investigation, learned the driver of the e-bike was a disqualified. As a result, the 47 year old was charged with Operation while Prohibited, processed and released on an appearance notice with a future court date. ST24004605

Failure to comply with demand 

A 36 year old Woodstock resident has been arrested. On Sunday March 24th 2024, St. Thomas police were called in regard to a possible impaired driver. Officers located the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop. Through investigation, police determined the driver was showing signs of impairment and the Alcohol Screening Device demand was made. The 36 year old driver refused the demand and was taken into custody where they were transported to police headquarters and charged with one count Failure to Comply with Demand and one count Drive Motor Vehicle with Open Container. The Woodstock resident was processed and released on an appearance notice. ST24004606

Warrant arrest

A 47 year old St. Thomas resident has been arrested. On Sunday March 24th 2024, OPP Oxford contacted STPS to notify that they had the individual in their custody on the strength of our warrant. The St. Thomas resident had been charged with one count of Harassment, stemming from an incident in January. St. Thomas police attended and transported the individual to STPS headquarters where they were processed and released on an undertaking with a future court date. ST24004612

Stolen Vehicle

A white 2014 Mini Cooper Countryman has been reported stolen. On Sunday March 24th 2024, St. Thomas police were called to investigate the theft that occurred at some point over the weekend. The vehicle was last seen in a parking garage on Talbot Street. Police are reviewing video surveillance in the area as they continue to investigate. ST24004640

RIDE

Approximately 22 vehicles were stopped and their drivers spoken to during a ride program in the city Sunday evening with no infractions found. ST24004653

Protecting yourself from fraud

In an ongoing effort to help protect the residents of St. Thomas from falling victim to online scams and fraud, the St. Thomas Police Service would like to remind the community on ways to protect themselves and things to consider while online:

  • Always get a second opinion from family or friends regarding the situation
  • Always verify the person you are corresponding with is legitimate
  • No employer will reach out to you through apps like Whats App
  • If you receive a call from someone claiming to be a family member or relative, hang up and call the number you have for them.
  • No employer will ask you to invest your own money or purchase gift cards.
  • Use the Canadian Anti- Fraud Centre as a resource to familiarize yourself with current scams and additional ways to protect yourself

And remember if it seems suspicious, it likely is.
