Fraud
Scammers have defrauded a St. Thomas resident out of thousands of dollars. Police were contacted by a local claiming they had fallen victim to a ‘gift card’ scam artist. The victim had been contacted over the phone by a person claiming to be employed as an investigator by the banks. The victim was told that their account had been compromised and the only way of correcting it was to pay restitution in the form of gift cards. To date the victim claims that they provided in excess of $15000 worth of gift cards from various retail outlets. The investigation has been turned over to members of the Criminal Investigation Branch for further follow-up. ST25015461
Shoplifter Identified
Loss Prevention Officers at a local retail store contacted the police Thursday morning after observing an individual load a cart and flee the store without paying. The man in question was identified by members of the police and officers are attempting to locate him. After leaving the store the male was observed on video unloading the cart and concealing in excess of $300 worth of merchandise in a backpack. If attempts to locate the male are unsuccessful, a warrant for his arrest will be sought. ST25015464
Impaired Driver Arrested
Officers were called to the city’s south-end Thursday night following a report of a collision with a pole. Officers arrived on scene to find the 18yr old driver and a friend outside of the vehicle. During the interaction officers believed the male to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage and that his ability to operate the vehicle was impaired. The male was taken into custody and later administered a breath test at the station. After 2 samples were taken the male provided samples over 2 times the legal limit. The male has been charged with Operation while Impaired by alcohol, and Operation while Impaired – blood alcohol concentration 80 plus. The male would later be released on an Undertaking with conditions and a future court date. ST25015501
Warrant Arrest
Officers involved in an unrelated investigation with a 37yr old St. Thomas women Thursday night, learned that the same women was wanted by the London Police. As such, she was arrested and later released on behalf of the London Police with a new court date. ST25015504
