Break and Enter and theft:
On the morning of the 9th of December a passerby noted damage to the front door of a downtown business. Police attended and found that the glass door to the business had been smashed and entry made to the store. A cash float was taken from the till. Video was obtained from nearby business and a male suspect was observed breaking the glass and entering the store. The matter is under investigation. Attempted break and enter:
On the 9th of December the superintendent of a north end apartment building contacted Police to report an attempted break and enter to the manager’s office. Video was provided that show three youths, 1 female and two males, attempting to make entry. A window was damage and a personal item was stolen by the youths during the incident. The matter is currently under investigation. Warrant arrest:
On the evening of the 9th officers on general patrol conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle in the city. A male party in the vehicle provided a fake name and information to Police. Through investigation it was learned that the male was wanted on two separate warrants held by the St Thomas Police Service. The male was arrested on the strength of the warrants and further charged with Obstruction. The male was transported to cells awaiting court – where he was later remanded into custody by the courts. Bail Violations:
Overnight on the 9th of December 2023 the St Thomas Police Service was contacted by a concerned citizen who had been allowing a 17 year old youth to reside at their residence as per previous release orders from the courts. Conditions of the release order included a curfew – and the caller indicated the male had left the residence under said curfew. Through investigation Police formed grounds to charge the youth with several bail violations. A warrant is being sought for his arrest. Incident ST23021707.
Protecting yourself from fraud
In an ongoing effort to help protect the residents of St. Thomas from falling victim to online scams and fraud, the St. Thomas Police Service would like to remind the community on ways to protect yourself and things to consider while online:
- Always get a second opinion from family or friends regarding the situation
- No employer will reach out to you through apps like Whats App or Telegram
- No employer will ever pay you in crypto currency
- No employer will ask you to invest your own money
- Use the Canadian Anti- Fraud Centre as a resource to familiarize yourself with current scams and additional ways to protect yourself
