Careless Driving Charge Laid – Child Struck in School Zone

St. Thomas, ON – Friday September 5th 2025

On Thursday September 4th, around 8:40 a.m. we responded to a collision in a school zone on the southside of the city.

Multiple 911 calls reported a child had been hit by a vehicle.

An 11 year old child was transported to the hospital for assessment, cleared medically and released with no apparent injury.

As a result of the investigation, the driver was charged with Careless Driving.

This incident occurred during the morning school commute, highlighting the critical need for all road users to slow down and remain alert in school zones and at intersections. With students now back in class, drivers are reminded to watch for children walking, biking and crossing roadways on their way to and from school. Extra caution and patience behind the wheel can help prevent tragedies and keep our children safe.

As noted in our Traffic Management Unit’s report published yesterday, a traffic project has been launched to address speeding in Community Safety Zones, specifically near schools. A second project has also been created to target violations occurring within 100 metres of a school, including stop sign infractions, pedestrian crosswalk compliance, seatbelt use and distracted driving.

The St. Thomas Police Service will continue to prioritize enforcement and education around school and community safety zones to protect our most vulnerable road users.
