A Simple Routine Goes a Long Way: STPS Reminds Residents to Lock Up

St. Thomas, ONMonday September 29th 2025

The St. Thomas Police Service is reminding residents to secure their vehicles and property after several recent reports of overnight vehicle entries and thefts.

In many cases, vehicles were left unlocked, making them easy targets for opportunistic theft.

Taking a few extra moments each night to lock your car, secure your property, and remove valuables can help keep your family and neighbourhood safe.

STPS encourages everyone to follow a simple nightly routine:

  • Lock all vehicle doors and remove valuables, including sports equipment and electronics.

  • Never leave wallets or purses inside of a vehicle.

  • Secure garage doors, sheds, and outdoor storage.

  • Ensure home doors and windows are locked.

  • Turn on exterior lights or use motion-sensor lighting.

“We’re asking everyone to make these steps part of their nightly routine to help prevent theft,” said Community Mobilization Officer, Constable Tammy Voth.

Constable Voth added, “If you notice suspicious activity, please report it to police at 519-631-1224, or call 911 in an emergency.”
