As students and families prepare to return to the classroom, the St. Thomas Police Service is reminding everyone that back-to-school safety is a shared responsibility.
Drivers should expect increased pedestrian, bicycle and vehicle traffic near schools and throughout residential neighbourhoods. Please slow down, remain alert, obey posted speed limits and give yourself extra time, particularly during morning arrival and afternoon dismissal.
Drivers are reminded to:
• Watch carefully for children who may enter the roadway unexpectedly
• Stop for school buses when their red lights are flashing and the stop arm is extended
• Follow the directions of crossing guards
• Avoid distractions and put phones away
• Use extra caution when entering or leaving driveways and parking areas
Students walking or cycling to school are encouraged to:
• Use sidewalks and marked crossings whenever possible
• Stop, look and listen before crossing the road
• Make eye contact with drivers before stepping into the roadway
• Keep phones and headphones away while crossing
• Wear a properly fitted helmet when cycling
• Travel with a friend or trusted adult when possible
Parents and caregivers are encouraged to review their child’s route to school before the first day and speak with them about road safety and what to do if they encounter an unsafe situation.
Members of the St. Thomas Police Service will be monitoring school zones and areas of increased traffic as students return to the classroom.
Our message to the community is simple: slow down, stay alert and put safety first. A few extra seconds of patience can help ensure every student arrives at school and returns home safely.
