Theft:
On Friday the 1st of December 2023 the St Thomas Police Service was contacted to have officers attend an east end business for reports of a shoplifter that had fled the store. Police attended and located a 17 year old St Thomas youth in the area and recovered the stolen property. The youth was arrested and charged with theft under $5000.00 and released with a future court date. Incident ST23021218.
Assault with a weapon:
On the 1st of December a female resident in the north end of the city reported an assault that had occurred the evening prior. The female reported that several parties had attended her residence demanding property be returned to them. During the incident a male suspect allegedly used pepper spray on the victim – spraying her in the eyes. Police formed grounds to charge a 28 year old St Thomas male with assault with a weapon – a warrant is being sought for his arrest. Incident ST23021219.
Theft of motor vehicle:
On Friday evening the St Thomas Police were notified by the registered owner of a vehicle that a male youth, known to them, had taken their motor vehicle without consent. Observations were made for the vehicle and the Police made several attempts to safely stop the vehicle – before the vehicle was abandoned and a foot pursuit ensued. The 14 year old male youth was arrested and charged with flight from Police, fail to stop for Police and Drive motor vehicle no licence. The youth was later released with a future court date and turned over to a parent. Incident ST23021229.
Impaired Operation/Bail Violations:
On Friday evening Police were alerted to a suspicious vehicle by a concerned citizen that was driving erratically in a parking lot in the south end of the City. Police attended and located the vehicle stuck on a cement parking barricade. Two adult males were located attempting to free the vehicle from where it had become lodged. Through investigation officers formed grounds to charge a 23 year old St Thomas male with impaired operation and operating a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol limit that exceeded 80mgs. The second male, a 19 year old St Thomas resident, was found to be breaching conditions of a previous release order and was arrested and charged for same. Both males were later released with a future court date. Incident ST23021231/ST23021233.
Assault:
In the early morning hours of the 2nd of December 2023 Police responded to a 911 call in the south end of the city where a female alleged she had been assaulted by her male partner. Police attended and formed grounds to charge a 40 year old male with assault and mischief. The male was arrested and transported to the station where he was later released on conditions. Incident ST23021232.
Protecting yourself from fraud
In an ongoing effort to help protect the residents of St. Thomas from falling victim to online scams and fraud, the St. Thomas Police Service would like to remind the community on ways to protect yourself and things to consider while online:
- Always get a second opinion from family or friends regarding the situation
- No employer will reach out to you through apps like Whats App or Telegram
- No employer will ever pay you in crypto currency
- No employer will ask you to invest your own money
- Use the Canadian Anti- Fraud Centre as a resource to familiarize yourself with current scams and additional ways to protect yourself
