The latest release of the 2023 Crime Severity Index (CSI) values by Statistics Canada presents a detailed look at crime trends across the country, with particular focus on changes observed in the city of St. Thomas. The CSI is a crucial measure that offers a clearer picture of crime trends by assigning weighted values to different offences, reflecting their relative seriousness based on judicial sentencing.
In 2023, the overall CSI in St. Thomas saw a significant decrease of 13.57%. This decline underscores the city’s ongoing efforts to combat crime effectively. Similarly, the Non-Violent Crime Severity Index experienced a notable reduction of 20.09%.
However, the Violent Crime Severity Index saw a slight increase of 7.66%. This increase highlights the importance of addressing violent crime in our community.
Chief Marc Roskamp states “The implementation of CIRT (Critical Incident Response Team) continued investments in both Street Crime and Property Crime Units, enhanced investigative focus on Human Trafficking and Intimate Partner Violence, continued investment in frontline resourcing, and the expansion of crime analysis capabilities, a second K9 unit, and innovative deployment strategies for all uniformed assets – will be our main operational focus moving forward aiming to decrease violent crime in our city.”
The St. Thomas Police Service remains committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all residents and will continue to adapt and innovate its strategies to effectively reduce crime severity in the community.
