Rising Numbers, Rising Response: increasing support for increased IPV incidents

St. Thomas, ONWednesday January 15th 2025

The St. Thomas Police Service (STPS) continues to prioritize its response to the increasing incidents of intimate partner violence within our community. Data from recent years highlights a steady and concerning trend:

  • 2024: 761 IPV incidents, with 157 resulting in charges.
  • 2023: 748 IPV incidents, with 132 resulting in charges.
  • 2022: 683 IPV incidents, with 114 resulting in charges.

This represents an 11.4% increase in IPV incidents between 2022 and 2024, as well as a 37.7% increase in the number of charges laid. These figures emphasize the growing complexity of IPV investigations and the need for comprehensive responses to address this issue.

Specialized Training and Coordinated Efforts

To meet this challenge, the STPS deploys highly trained officers and support staff specializing in IPV investigations. Our coordinated approach is led by the Community Patrol Division and Investigative Services Unit and a collaboration with multi-sectoral professionals, like Victim Services Elgin.

The importance of this work was formally recognized in the 2023-26 Strategic Plan, which identifies domestic violence and violence against women as key priorities for our service.

Strengthening Community Partnerships

Recognizing the importance of partnerships in supporting victims and survivors, STPS has taken deliberate steps to enhance collaboration:

  • In 2023, we strengthened our partnership with Victim Services Elgin (VSE) by providing dedicated office space within police headquarters. This move has allowed for greater alignment of resources and more effective support for victims.
  • In the fall of 2023, we secured a Provincial Victim Support Grant to expand education, awareness, and direct support efforts for those impacted by intimate partner violence.

Our commitment to community collaboration continued in 2024 with the launch of the R.I.S.E. campaign designed to raise awareness and provide resources to combat IPV.

Interpreting the Data

While statistical increases provide a snapshot of reported incidents, they do not tell the whole story. Legislative and regulatory provisions govern the release of sensitive information, ensuring the protection of victims, survivors, and their families. Factors such as greater awareness, improved reporting mechanisms, and socio-economic pressures in a post-pandemic environment have also influenced these numbers.

Accountability and Commitment

The St. Thomas Police Service remains committed to accountability, transparency, and meaningful action. Through enhanced training, community partnerships, and public initiatives, we are working diligently to support victims and create a safer community.

Together, we can address these complex issues and foster safety and wellbeing for all residents of St. Thomas.
