Warrant arrest

A 30 year old St. Thomas resident that was wanted by STPS for one count Fail to Comply with Probation Order, One count Utter Threats and one count Assault with a Weapon after an incident on Tuesday March 5th 2024, has been arrested. The individual was located by police after being called to attend an address off of Talbot Street for an unwanted person. The 30 year old was arrested and transported to police headquarters where they were processed on the charges and transferred to the Elgin County Courthouse to attend court. As a result, the individual was remanded into custody. ST24003532/ST24003552

Theft

Two Norko mountain bikes have been reported stolen. On Tuesday March 5th 2024, the owner of the bikes contacted police to report the theft after reviewing their home security footage. The video revealed an unknown person entering the backyard of the home on Wellington Street and take the bikes. This remains under investigation. ST24003538

Attempt break and enter 

St. Thomas police are currently investigating an attempted break and enter. On Tuesday March 5th 2024, STPS was contacted by a contractor who reported the back door of a business currently under renovation, had been damaged in an attempt to gain entry. This remains under investigation. ST24003542

Assault

A 39 year old St. Thomas resident has been arrested. On Tuesday March 5th 2024, officers were called to a southside residence after a verbal altercation between the occupants of a home had turned physical. Through investigation, it was learned an assault had occurred and police formed grounds to charge the 39 year old with one count of Assault and one count Mischief under $5,000. The individual was transported to police headquarters where they were processed and released on an undertaking with a future court date. ST24003546

Fraud 

A St. Thomas resident is out $3,000 after falling victim to a scam. On Tuesday March 5th 2024, the individual attended police headquarters to report that they were contacted by someone who was believed to be from their bank offering additional security measure for their account. The victim provided the person with the information they requested and shortly after, became aware of the money being transferred out of their account. This remains under investigation. ST24003562

Stolen bike, recovered 

A E-bike reported stolen to police on Tuesday March 5th 2024, has been recovered. At approximately 3:30 p.m. the owner of the bike contacted police to report that their red Motorino E-bike had been stolen from an address near Athletic park. At approximately 7:30 p.m. police received a call in regards to a suspicious person in the same area, hiding what appeared to be a bike under a tarp. Police attended and located the stolen bike. St. Thomas police are reviewing video surveillance of the area as they continue to investigate. ST24003563/ST24003539

Protecting yourself from fraud

In an ongoing effort to help protect the residents of St. Thomas from falling victim to online scams and fraud, the St. Thomas Police Service would like to remind the community on ways to protect themselves and things to consider while online:

  • Always get a second opinion from family or friends regarding the situation
  • Always verify the person you are corresponding with is legitimate
  • No employer will reach out to you through apps like Whats App
  • If you receive a call from someone claiming to be a family member or relative, hang up and call the number you have for them.
  • No employer will ask you to invest your own money or purchase gift cards.
  • Use the Canadian Anti- Fraud Centre as a resource to familiarize yourself with current scams and additional ways to protect yourself

And remember if it seems suspicious, it likely is.
