Media Release Tuesday March 5th 2024

Arson

St. Thomas police are currently investigating an arson. On Monday March 4th 2024, officers were called to an address near Athletic Park by St. Thomas Fire to investigate. Upon police arrival, officers learned STFD had extinguished a pile of bridge ties that had caught fire. No injuries were reported. This remains under investigation. ST24003476

Stolen Vehicle 

St. Thomas police are currently investigating the report of a stolen U-Haul from a business on South Edgeware Road. On Monday March 4th 2024, officers were called by the business owner who wished to report that just after 2 a.m. on March 2nd, an unknown person attended the area, gained access to the vehicle and left the area in the vehicle a short time later. Video surveillance of the incident is being reviewed as officers continue to investigate. ST24003485

Warrant Arrest 

A 38 year old St. Thomas resident has been arrested. On Monday March 4th 2024, officers on community patrol observed the individual driving a vehicle on the southside of the city. The individual was known to police to be wanted by our service on a outstanding warrant for Theft under $5,000, Possession of Property obtained by Crime and Identity Theft stemming from incidents in 2023. A traffic stop was conducted and through investigation, the 38 year old was arrested and charged with one count Obstruct Peace Officer and one count of Driving While Under Suspension. The St. Thomas resident was transported to police headquarters where they were processed on the charges and released on an undertaking with a future court date. ST24003487/ST24003489

Assault / Failure to comply 

A 29 year old St. Thomas resident has been arrested. On Monday March 4th 2024, police were called to a Talbot Street address to investigate the report of an assault that had occurred. Upon arrival, police located the involved parties and through investigation learned at verbal dispute between the two had turned physical resulting in minor injuries. Through investigation, police learned the accused was currently on release conditions to not communicate with the victim. As a result, the 29 year old was arrested and charged with one count of Assault, two counts of Failure to Comply with Undertaking and one count Failure to Comply with Probation Order. The individual was transported to police headquarters where they were processed and held for a morning court appearance. ST24003517

Assault with a weapon, threats 

A 30 year old St. Thomas resident is wanted by STPS. Just after midnight on Tuesday March 5th 2024, officers were called to investigate the report of someone with a weapon at an address on Princess Avenue.  Upon arrival, police learned the accused had attended the area and threatened the victim. Through investigation, police formed ground to charge the 30 year old St. Thomas resident with one count Fail to Comply with Probation Order, One count Utter Threats and one count Assault with a Weapon. A warrant for arrest has been requested. No injuries were reported. ST24003532

Theft

St. Thomas police are currently investigating a report of stolen car keys. On Tuesday March 5th 2024, police were contacted by a vehicle owner who wished to report that their car keys, backpack and personal belongings had been stolen from a locker while they were at the gym. Police are reviewing the available video surveillance as they continue to investigate. ST24003535

Protecting yourself from fraud

In an ongoing effort to help protect the residents of St. Thomas from falling victim to online scams and fraud, the St. Thomas Police Service would like to remind the community on ways to protect themselves and things to consider while online:

  • Always get a second opinion from family or friends regarding the situation
  • Always verify the person you are corresponding with is legitimate
  • No employer will reach out to you through apps like Whats App
  • If you receive a call from someone claiming to be a family member or relative, hang up and call the number you have for them.
  • No employer will ask you to invest your own money or purchase gift cards.
  • Use the Canadian Anti- Fraud Centre as a resource to familiarize yourself with current scams and additional ways to protect yourself

And remember if it seems suspicious, it likely is.
