Media Release Monday March 11th 2024

Theft

St. Thomas police are currently investigating multiple thefts that occurred over the weekend.

On Friday March 8th 2024, officers were called to a retail store on Talbot Street to investigate the report of approximately $30 in grocery items being stolen. The individual was approached by store staff and the goods returned. ST24003747

On Saturday March 9th 2024, officers were called to an address on Chestnut Street to investigate the report of laundry being stolen from a shared laundry room of an apartment building. Approximately $300 in clothing has been reported stolen. Police are reviewing available CCTV as they continue to investigate. ST24003815

On Saturday March 9th 2024, officers were called to a retail store on Talbot Street to investigate the report of an unknown person stealing dog food, accessories, a harness and dog toys. The suspect is described as a female in their thirties between 5’6-5’9 with thin, curly blonde hair, wearing large head scarf, bell-bottom jeans, black jacket, and white boots with rhinestones. On Sunday March 10th 2024, officers were called to a gas station on Talbot Street to investigate the report on an unknown person attending the gas pumps, filling two canisters and leaving the area failing to pay. Police are reviewing available CCTV as they continue to investigate. ST24003885

A 35 year old St. Thomas resident has been trespassed from a downtown variety store after police were called to investigate a theft. On Sunday March 10th 2024, officers were called to the area after the individual had left the store with grocery items, failing to pay. Officers located the individual out front of the store and served them a trespass notice. ST24003862

Mischief 

St. Thomas police are currently investigating damage to vehicle. On Sunday March 10th 2024, officers were called by the owner of a vehicle that was parked on Hiawatha Street who wished to report the tires had been slashed and the windshield broken. Police are reviewing available CCTV as they continue to investigate. ST24003865

Vehicle entry 

St. Thomas police are currently investigate a vehicle entry that occurred on Southwick Street. On Sunday March 10th 2024, STPS were called by the vehicle owner who wished to report that sometime in the overnight hours, their vehicle had been entered. Police attended the area and through investigation, found damage to the interior of the vehicle that would be consistent with an attempt to steal the vehicle. This remains under investigation. Warrant arrest 

A 25 year old St. Thomas resident has been arrested. On Monday March 11th 2024, London police contacted STPS to inform us that they had the 25 year old in their custody on the strength of our warrant for Failure to Comply with Probation and Take Motor Vehicle without Consent stemming from an incident in March of 2023. The individual has been additionally charged with Failure to Comply with Probation and Theft of a Motor Vehicle over $5,000 after being identified as the person responsible for stealing a vehicle from a retail store on Talbot Street, Saturday evening. St. Thomas police attended London to take custody of the 25 year old who was transported to STPS headquarters where they were processed on the charges and held for a morning court appearance. Protecting yourself from fraud

In an ongoing effort to help protect the residents of St. Thomas from falling victim to online scams and fraud, the St. Thomas Police Service would like to remind the community on ways to protect themselves and things to consider while online:

  • Always get a second opinion from family or friends regarding the situation
  • Always verify the person you are corresponding with is legitimate
  • No employer will reach out to you through apps like Whats App
  • If you receive a call from someone claiming to be a family member or relative, hang up and call the number you have for them.
  • No employer will ask you to invest your own money or purchase gift cards.
  • Use the Canadian Anti- Fraud Centre as a resource to familiarize yourself with current scams and additional ways to protect yourself

And remember if it seems suspicious, it likely is.
