The St. Thomas Police Service is reminding residents to secure their vehicles following an increase in vehicle entries and thefts reported across the city.
In most cases, the vehicles had been left unlocked and showed no signs of forced entry.
The incidents have occurred in residential neighbourhoods and commercial parking lots throughout the city. Items reported stolen include:
- Passports and vehicle permits
- Wallets, cash and bank cards
- Personal identification
- Tools
- Sunglasses and electronics
- Clothing, sporting equipment and other personal property
In several incidents, stolen bank cards were used to make unauthorized purchases before they could be cancelled.
One individual was arrested after property stolen from a vehicle was located and recovered.
These thefts are often crimes of opportunity. An unlocked door can provide quick access to personal information and financial cards that may be used to commit further offences.
STPS is asking residents to make vehicle security part of their nightly routine:
- Lock all doors and close every window
- Remove wallets, passports, bank cards and personal identification
- Never leave keys or valuables inside the vehicle
- Keep bags, tools and electronics out of sight
- Park in a well-lit area whenever possible
- Report vehicle entries and thefts to police
