Ensuring Safety in Roundabouts: Know the Rules, Drive with Caution

St. Thomas, ONTuesday March 4th 2025

The St. Thomas Police Service is reminding drivers to exercise caution and follow the rules of the road when navigating roundabouts, particularly multi-lane roundabouts, to ensure the safety of all road users.

Recent observations have highlighted concerns regarding improper lane usage, failure to yield, and unsafe driving behavior. In response, officers are actively conducting education and enforcement to address these issues and promote safe driving habits in roundabouts.

Key Safety Reminders for Roundabouts:

  • Know Your Lane: Choose the correct lane before entering the roundabout. Lane markings and signs will guide you based on your intended exit.
  • Yield to Traffic: Vehicles inside the roundabout always have the right-of-way. Enter only when it is safe to do so.
  • Do Not Change Lanes: Stay in your lane throughout the roundabout and follow the designated exit.
  • Signal When Exiting: Use your right turn signal before exiting to indicate your intentions to other drivers.
  • Large Vehicles Need Space: Trucks and other large vehicles may require additional room to maneuver. Give them the space they need.

The City is exploring additional signage at multi-lane roundabouts to further improve awareness and compliance. In the meantime, drivers are urged to familiarize themselves with proper roundabout navigation and remain vigilant.
