Building Bridges: Celebrating Police – Community Partnerships – Community Resource Unit, Special Constables

Police Week is an annual recognition week that focuses on increasing community awareness and acknowledgement of police services, while strengthening partnerships between police and those they serve.

The provincial theme for 2023 is Building Bridges: Celebrating Police – Community Partnerships”

In 2022, The St. Thomas Police Service launched a unit comprised of Special Constables with social services and health care backgrounds to better respond to complex social and health related issues facing our community. A growing percentage of police work has been directed towards social and health related issues, not crime.  Our Community Resource Unit continues to build relationships with our vulnerable population and our downtown business owners. This deployment allows for better service delivery and collaboration, supporting all members of our community.

As recently as May 3rd our Special Constables administered lifesaving Narcan to an individual experiencing an overdose.
