St. Thomas, ON – Tuesday November 4th 2025
The St. Thomas Police Service continues Crime Prevention Week 2025 with a focus on Property Crime and Break and Enter Prevention. Protecting your home, vehicle, and personal belongings begins with simple habits that can make a significant difference.
The St. Thomas Police Service reminds residents that many property related offences are crimes of opportunity. Thieves often target unlocked doors, visible valuables, or homes and businesses that appear unoccupied.
“Small actions can have a big impact,” said Constable Tammy Voth – Community Mobilization Officer with STPS. “Locking doors, turning on exterior lights, and removing valuables from vehicles are easy steps everyone can take to reduce crime in our neighbourhoods.”
The St. Thomas Police Service’s Community Mobilization Officer works closely with residents and business owners through Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) — a proactive approach that encourages simple, practical changes to deter criminal activity. Strategies such as improved lighting, clear sightlines, and secure access points can make properties less appealing to offenders.
Property Safety Tips:
• Lock doors and windows — even when you’re at home.
• Remove keys, wallets, and electronics from vehicles at all times.
• Install motion sensors, exterior lighting and exterior cameras.
• Keep shrubs and trees trimmed to eliminate hiding spots.
• Report suspicious activity to police immediately.
Community vigilance and communication remain key to preventing property crime. Neighbours looking out for one another contribute to safer, more resilient neighbourhoods.
