St. Thomas Police Service Announces Deployment of New Canine Team

St. Thomas, ONFriday September 19th, 2025

The St. Thomas Police Service is proud to announce the official deployment of our newly trained Canine Team, comprised of Constable Derek Smith and Police Service Dog (PSD) Nighthawk.

Constable Smith and PSD Nighthawk have just completed an intensive 16-week Basic Police Service Dog Course hosted by the Waterloo Regional Police Service. This specialized training focused on obedience, tracking, criminal apprehension, evidence recovery, and handler protection – essential skills that will directly support front-line policing and public safety in St. Thomas.

PSD Nighthawk, a Belgian Shepherd (Malinois breed), is one of the newest members of the police service. Known for their intelligence, athleticism, and drive, Malinois are widely regarded as one of the top working dog breeds for modern policing.

“We are proud to welcome Constable Smith and PSD Nighthawk back to St. Thomas. This Canine Team will be a significant asset to our front-line operations, enhancing our capacity to respond to high-risk incidents, locate missing persons, and recover evidence essential to ongoing investigations. We are confident they will make a positive and lasting impact in serving our community. Once again, our members, and the community, are well-served by the continued support of our Police Services Board, whose recognition of evolving public safety needs and strategic foresight help ensure a safe and secure St. Thomas.”  Chief Marc Roskamp

The addition of the Canine Unit reflects the St. Thomas Police Service’s ongoing commitment to innovation, specialized training, and community safety. The team is now operational and ready to respond to calls for service across the city.
