Fraud:
Police spoke with the victim who advised that on 22may2025 they received a phone call from whom they thought was a bank employee. It is believed that this was not the case and their banking information was accessed through a combination of questions and remote phone access. Several items were changed on their accounts and they are out $100,000. The incident was reported to Equifax and Canadian anti-fraud Centre. ST25008626
Protecting yourself from fraud
In an ongoing effort to help protect the residents of St. Thomas from falling victim to online scams and fraud, the St. Thomas Police Service would like to remind the community on ways to protect yourself and things to consider while online:
- Always get a second opinion from family or friends regarding the situation
- No employer will reach out to you through apps like Whats App or Telegram
- No employer will ever pay you in crypto currency
- No employer will ask you to invest your own money
- Use the Canadian Anti- Fraud Centre as a resource to familiarize yourself with current scams and additional ways to protect yourself
Warrant arrest:
A St. Thomas resident attended the station to turn himself in. The male was arrested on strength of warrant for Criminal Harassment x3 and released on a Undertaking with a future court date. ST25008632
Theft:
Lost Prevention contacted police to make a report of a male who selected a package of cooked chicken tenders (value $5.05) and proceeded to consume them while in the store, before concealing other items & leaving without making any attempt to pay. A male was located a short distance away and was arrested & charged with theft under and FTC with probation. Released on Undertaking and with a future court date. ST25008658
Warrant arrest:
A male St. Thomas resident was arrested on an endorsed bench warrant while police were on patrol during the evening of Friday May 23rd, 2025. The male was released on appearance notice with a future court date. ST25008614
Domestic assault:
Police responded to a dispute between the victim and a husband. The dispute became physical when arrested party struck the victim in the head with a book and hit her with an open hand. The arrested party was taken into custody for assault and assault with a weapon. He was held for court where he was released by the court with conditions and a future court date. ST25008670
Mischief/ attempt B&E:
In the area of the 400 block of Wellington road police were contacted by a residents to report waking up to the sound of someone kicking in their front door. No entry made however significant damage. If anyone observed or has video of any one suspicious in the area around 1am to 2am please contact police at 519-631-1224 or Crime stoppers. ST25008680
