Standalone media release – Youths damage homes overnight in potential social media challenge

In a possible local iteration of an online social media challenge- several youths were involved in kicking doors in the City overnight startling residents and damaging property.

Members of the St Thomas Police Service are currently investigating a series of related incidents that occurred overnight and in the early morning hours of Saturday the 26th of April 2025.

Several residents contacted us reporting that unknown person(s) had kicked their doors – each believing that they had been the victim of an attempted break and enter. A resident in the south end of the City Contacted Police reporting a similar incident and that her husband was following the individual – who was on camera wearing a Balaclava, kicking the door, and stealing an item off of the front porch.

A 13-year-old male was located a short distance away and the homeowner confirmed that the male was the party responsible— and video evidence was later provided confirming the same. The male made utterances to officers admitting he was responsible for two other similar incidents that were under investigation at that time.

The male party was transported to the station and his parents were contacted to attend. The male was interviewed and later released on a youth undertaking – charged attempted break and enter x3, trespass by night x3, theft under $5000.00 and wear disguise with intent.

Since the time of the first three calls for service we have received in excess of fourteen calls regarding similar incidents throughout the night. Video has been obtained showing the male youth, identified by his clothing, as well as at least two other accomplices, kicking a door at least one other residence and the parties are believed to be responsible for all incidents reported overnight. There is damage to numerous homes and members of uniform patrol and our property crime unit are working diligently to gather evidence.

We are seeking the assistance of the public in obtaining video evidence of the incidents occurring overnight.

If you are the victim of a similar incident, please contact the St Thomas Police Service to report the matter.
