Crime Prevention Week – Retail Safety and Security

St. Thomas, ON Monday November 4th 2024

As part of our efforts to raise awareness during Crime Prevention Week, the St. Thomas Police Service is reinforcing the importance of the Retail Safety and Security Guide recently released by the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police (OACP). Having already shared this valuable resource with our local business community, we now aim to underscore key aspects that can significantly improve retail safety.

Retail crime, including theft, fraud, and organized crime, remains a prevalent issue in our city. The Retail Safety and Security Guide offers tailored solutions that help retailers protect both their assets and their employees. The guide emphasizes actionable, preventative measures, including:

  • Advanced Employee Awareness: Teaching staff to identify and respond to suspicious activity in real-time.
  • Upgraded Physical Security: Implementing measures such as enhanced surveillance, improved lighting, and secure product placements.
  • Strategic Store Design: Leveraging Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) to create spaces that minimize opportunities for crime.
  • Streamlined Reporting Protocols: Encouraging businesses to report incidents swiftly, fostering stronger partnerships with law enforcement.

As we continue to observe Crime Prevention Week 2024 under the theme Awareness in Action: Keeping Ontario Safe Together, the St. Thomas Police Service remains committed to supporting local businesses with resources that promote safety and security.

Retailers are encouraged to review the guide in detail and incorporate its recommendations into their daily operations.
