Media Release Monday October 7th 2024

Break and Enter

A wallet containing personal identification and cash has been reported stolen after a break and enter was reported to police. On October 4th 2024, STPS were contacted in regards to an unknown person entering a trailer and stealing the wallet. Police are reviewing available video surveillance in the downtown area where there incident occurred. This remains under investigation. ST24017916

In the early morning hours of October 5th, St. Thomas police were called to investigate the report of a residential break and enter. STPS attended a Talbot Street address and through investigation learned two unknown individuals had gained access to an apartment but had fled the area quickly after. CCTV of the incident was reviewed but did not capture the individuals responsible. No injuries or damaged was reported. ST24017959

Theft

St. Thomas police are investigating the report of approximately $500 of scrap metal drums, stolen from an address in the industrial area. On Friday October 4th 2024, police were called by a business owner who wished to report that on two separate occasions, a vehicle attended the property and two unknown individuals gained access to the fenced area surrounding the business and removed the drums. Video surveillance of the incidents is being reviewed as police continue to investigate. ST24017918

St. Thomas police are investigating a shoplifting incident that occurred at a downtown grocery store on Friday October 4th 2024. It was reported that an unknown individual attended the store, concealed a quantity of groceries and left the store, failing to pay. Video of the individual is being reviewed as police work to identify the individual responsible. ST24017919

An electronic mixer valued at approximately $225 has been reported stolen from a retail store on Talbot Street. On Friday October 4th 2024, officers attended the store to investigate the report on an unknown individual attending the store and failing to pay for the item. The individual and vehicle in which they left in, were captured on video surveillance that has been provided to police as they continue to investigate. ST24017931

A bike has been reported stolen from an address on Talbot Street. On Sunday October 6th, police were called to the address to investigate the report of an unknown person stealing a bike from the outside of an apartment. Video of the incident is being reviewed by police. ST24018077

On Sunday October 6th 2024, police were called to a downtown grocery store to investigate the report of approximately $900 in items being stolen. The individual responsible for the theft was approached by store staff in an effort to stop them from leaving. An interaction between the two resulted in the staff member being assaulted by the individual. As a result, a 44 year old St. Thomas resident has been charged with one count of Assault, one count Breach of Probation and one count Theft under $5,000. The individual was transported to police headquarters where they were processed and released on an undertaking with a future court date. ST24018073

Mischief

St. Thomas police are currently investigating several incidents of mischief:

  • A window in the 500 block of Talbot Street was reported smashed during the daytime hours of Saturday October 5th 2024. ST24018045
  • A window in the 300 block of Talbot Street was reported smashed during the daytime hours of Sunday October 6th 2024. ST24018061
  • A window to a business on White Street was reported smashed in the early morning hours of Monday October 7th 2024. ST24018087

Video surveillance of the incidents above is being reviewed as police continue to investigate.

Fraud 

A local resident is out approximately $1900 after falling to victim to a rental scam. On Friday October 4th 2024, the individual attended police headquarters to report the incident. It was reported that the victim had replied to a rental advertisement on Facebook Marketplace, eventually signing a digital agreement and securing the rental with an electronic transfer of first and last months rent. Once the money had been sent, the victim was no longer able to contact the individual they had been communicating with. This remains under investigation. ST24017930

Intimate Partner Violence 

A 36 year old St. Thomas resident has been charged with Assault and Uttering Threats after police were called to a home on the west end of the city on Friday. Upon arrival, police learned the victim had been physically assaulted by their spouse after verbal argument between the two had escalated.  The accused had left the area prior to police arrival. A warrant for arrest has been requested. ST24017942

A 26 year old St. Thomas resident has been arrested. On Sunday October 6th 2024, police attended an address on the southside of the city to investigate the report of a disturbance. Upon arrival, police learned a verbal argument between spouses had escalated resulting in the victim being physically assaulted. As a result, the 26 year old accused was charged with one count of Assault and transported to police headquarters where they were processed and released on an undertaking with a future court date. Breach of Probation

A 34 year old St. Thomas resident has been arrested. At approximately 3:30 a.m. this morning, police were called to an address on Hiawatha Street to investigate the report on an unwanted person. Upon arrival, officers located the 34 year old who was known to them to be on conditions to not attend the address of the call. As a result, the 34 was charged with one count of Breach of Probation and transported to police headquarters where they were processed and released on an undertaking with a future court date.
