Fraud
St. Thomas Police were called to a downtown business, when a bystander observed a 76-year-old St. Thomas resident buying thousands of dollars in gift cards. The bystander attempted to stop the individual from completing the transaction, to no avail. Police were able to follow up with the information, locate and determine that the victim believed the communication through Facebook was with a cousin, discussing a government grant, which was an investment scam. The victim had already given 5000$ to the scammer. ST24015193.
St. Thomas Police wish to remind the public that no legitimate company or organization will request payment in the form of gift cards. Additionally, if you are unsure about what is being requested of you, or feel like something isn’t right. Please call St. Thomas Police for advice.
