Media release 18th of December 2023

Disturbance:

On Thursday the 14th of December 2023 the St Thomas Police Service attended the downtown core for a disturbance caused by two adult males fighting in the middle of Talbot Street. On arrival Police located a 51 year old male brandishing a fire extinguisher at another male during a heated disagreement. The disturbance was calmed and Police determined the other party was not seeking charges due to the disturbance. The 51 year St Thomas resident was arrested on charges stemming from an unrelated matter, transported to the Police station, and held for court. The male was later remanded into custody by the courts. Incidents ST23021967/ST23ST23021964.

Unwanted Person/Warrant Arrest:

On Friday the 15th of December 2023 Police attended a north end residence for reports of a male visitor inside the home that was causing a disturbance and refusing to leave. Police attended and determined the 34 year old male was further wanted on outstanding warrants held by St Thomas Police. The male was arrested on the strength of the warrant and held for court. The male was later remanded into custody by the courts. Incident ST23022004.

Festive RIDE program:

On Saturday the 16th of December the St Thomas Police Service conducted traffic enforcement RIDE programs during both dayshift and nightshift. Several hundred vehicles were checked and a single roadside breath test was conducted – resulting in no charges. The St Thomas Police Service would like to commend the citizens of St Thomas for an excellent holiday season thus far in relation to impaired driving. Incidents ST23022069/ST23022097.

Recovered stolen vehicle:

On Sunday the 17th of December a concerned citizen contacted the St Thomas Police Service regarding a suspicious vehicle left in one of the City’s recreational park areas. The vehicle had damage in several locations and appeared abandoned. Police attended and determined that the vehicle had recently been reported stolen to the London Police Service. London Police were contacted and the vehicle was processed and towed according to their direction. Warrant Arrest/Obstruct Police:

On Sunday the 17th the St Thomas Police Service was alerted by a concerned citizen to two males in the north end of the City that appeared to be dismantling bicycles. Police attended and spoke with the two males, one of whom provided a false name and identity information. Through investigation the male was identified and it was learned that the 32 year old St Thomas resident had several warrants for his arrest held by St Thomas Police. The male was arrested on the strength of the warrants and further charged with Obstruct. The male was held for court and later released by the courts. Incident ST23022125.

Assault:

In the afternoon on the 17th Police were contacted to attend a south end apartment building for reports that several males had attended the building and at least one had forced his way inside the apartment and assaulted a tenant. It was also learned that someone in the group had also pepper sprayed the same tenant. Police attended and medical assistance was offered for the victim. A short time later Police located the primary instigator, a 52 year old St Thomas male, who was arrested and held for court- charged with unlawfully in a dwelling and assault. Warrant Arrest:

On the 17th of December 2023 a 42 year old male attended the front counter of the St Thomas Police Service to turn himself in on an existing warrant. The male was arrested and later released with a future court date. Incident ST23022136.

Collision and Roadside Screening:

In the early morning hours on the 18th of December Police were alerted to a single motor vehicle collision, vehicle in the ditch, via a 911 call from a passerby. Police attended and located the registered owner of the vehicle who was driving the vehicle at the time of the incident. Through investigation Police formed grounds to suspect the driver had been operating the vehicle under the influence of alcohol and a roadside screening demand was made. The driver registered a warning on the device and was issued an Ontario Driver’s licence sanction of a three day suspension. Incident ST23022144.

Protecting yourself from fraud

In an ongoing effort to help protect the residents of St. Thomas from falling victim to online scams and fraud, the St. Thomas Police Service would like to remind the community on ways to protect yourself and things to consider while online:

  • Always get a second opinion from family or friends regarding the situation
  • No employer will reach out to you through apps like Whats App or Telegram
  • No employer will ever pay you in crypto currency
  • No employer will ask you to invest your own money
  • Use the Canadian Anti- Fraud Centre as a resource to familiarize yourself with current scams and additional ways to protect yourself
