Crime Prevention Week 2023 – Lock it or Lose it

St. Thomas, ONMonday November 6th 2023

The phrase “Lock it or Lose it” resonates with all of us. However, the St. Thomas Police Service is taking the opportunity to emphasize that the citizens of St. Thomas are pivotal partners in preventing vehicle break-ins.

From November 5th to 11th, Crime Prevention Week takes center stage in the province. In collaboration with the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police (OACP) and the Ministry of the Solicitor General, the St. Thomas Police Service underscores the significance of crime prevention in fostering a safer and healthier community.

The “lock it or lose it” philosophy maybe one our community is familiar with, however Crime Prevention Week allows us to reiterate the crucial reminder.

Through a previous study conducted by STPS, specific data related to vehicle break-ins was collected. The findings revealed that perpetrators often attempt car door handles. If locked, they move on; if unlocked, they rummage through belongings. Incidents where multiple unlocked vehicles in the same neighborhood were entered while locked ones were ignored support this theory.

The data disclosed that over 55% of the entered vehicles sustained no damage and were unlocked.

Cash, identification, wallets, vehicle documents, and tools rank among the frequently stolen items. This often leads to fraudulent bank charges and the misuse of victims’ identification.

Establishing a simple routine that involves locking your vehicle and securing your property stands as the most straightforward method to shield yourself from crime. By doing so, you collaborate with the St. Thomas Police Service, contributing to a safer community for everyone.

Awareness, Engagement, Prevention
