Halloween Safety Tips from STPS

St. Thomas, ON October 31st, 2024

Halloween is here! An eagerly anticipated night for every child and ensuring a safe and enjoyable trick-or-treating experience is a collective responsibility.

As we prepare for a busy day today and this evening the St. Thomas Police Service is providing essential tips for safety on Halloween night:

  1. Visibility is Key: Encourage children to wear bright, reflective costumes or add reflective tape to their outfits. Carrying flashlights or glow sticks also increases visibility for both pedestrians and drivers, reducing the risk of accidents.
  2. Stay in Groups: Advise trick-or-treaters to travel in groups with friends or family members. There’s safety in numbers, and it’s easier for drivers to spot a group of children rather than individuals.
  3. Plan a Safe Route: Plan a route in familiar, well-lit areas and discuss it with your children before you head out. Avoid busy roads and remind them to use crosswalks and pedestrian signals.
  4. Check Treats Thoroughly: Before indulging in any treats, inspect them carefully. Discard any open or tampered candies.
  5. Home Safety: If you’re welcoming trick-or-treaters at home, ensure your property is well-lit. Remove any obstacles from the walkways to prevent tripping. Keep pets away from the door to avoid startling visitors.
  6. HAVE FUN!!!

Have a safe and Happy Halloween, from the St. Thomas Police Service.
