Media release 20th of August 2023

Assault:

On the 18th of August 2023 Police were notified of a disturbance between a man and a woman in the downtown core. Through investigation it was learned that the two were in an intimate relationship and an argument had turned into a physical altercation – that included both parties assaulting the other with improvised objects at hand. The entirety of the incident was captured on video and Police were able to form grounds to charge both parties. On the 19th of August 2023 the 48 year old male was located by Police and arrested on the outstanding charges – assault with a weapon and disobeying a court order. Search incident to arrest the male was found to have a quantity of illicit drugs on his person and was further charged with two counts of possession of a controlled substance. The 38 year old female is still outstanding and a warrant is being sought for her arrest – also charged with assault with a weapon.  Incidents ST23014646 and ST23014652.

Warrant Arrest:

On the 18th of August 2023 a 52 year old male turned himself in at the St Thomas Police Service on an outstanding warrant held by the service for theft. The male was later released with a future court date. Incident ST23014654.

Mischief:

On the 18th of August a local resident reported their vehicle had been damaged while parked overnight behind a downtown business. Police attended and found that the vehicle had been scratched intentionally in several locations with an unknown object. The matter is under investigation. Vehicle Entries:

On the 18th of August 2023 a local resident in the west end of the city reported their vehicle had been entered overnight and a quantity of money and some sunglasses had been stolen. The homeowner was able to provide surveillance video and the suspect was identified by Police. Charges are pending and a warrant will be sought for the 64 year old suspect’s arrest. On the 18th of August 2023 another local resident in the west end of the city reported their vehicle had been rummaged through overnight but nothing appeared to be missing at the time of call. The matter is under investigation. Theft, Unlawful use of credit card:

In the evening hours on the 18th of August a local resident had utilized a banking machine to withdraw money for personal use. The complainant later realized that they had inadvertently left their card in the machine – and discovered that the credit card had subsequently been used to make purchases in the area. Through investigation two male suspects, known to police, were observed utilizing the card to make said purchases. A warrant is being sought for a 31 year old St Thomas resident – charged Possession of property obtained by crime, use credit card, and fail to comply with probation. A second warrant is also be sought for a 47 year old male for theft under $5000.00 and trafficking a credit card. Incident ST23014692.

Theft of Motor Vehicle:

On the 19th of August 2023 a local U-Haul dealer located in the south end of the city reported a U-Haul truck stolen overnight. The key for the vehicle was accounted for by the dealer. Stolen is a 2018 Ford 650 truck, with a 26 foot cargo box, clearly marked as a U-Haul rental. A stock image of the vehicle type is located below. Warrant Arrests:

On the 19th of August 2023 the St Thomas Police Service was notified by the Elgin OPP that they had a 36 year old male in custody on outstanding charges held by their service. The male was also wanted on an outstanding warrant held by St Thomas PS. The male was transported to the St Thomas Police Service building and held for weekend video court related to the outstanding charges. The male was later remanded into custody by the courts. On the 19th of August 2023 Police were contacted to attend a south end business for an unwanted male that was loitering in the area. On arrival Police identified the male and were aware of an outstanding warrant for his arrest. The 36 year old St Thomas resident was transported to the St Thomas Police Service and later released with a future court date. Incident ST23014721.

Disturbance:

In the early morning hours of the 20th of August 2023 Police were called to attend a local licenced establishment for a disturbance between several males. Police located a 22 year old male who was involved in the disturbance and was clearly heavily intoxicated. The male was arrested under the liquor Licence and Control Act for public intoxication and transported to the station- later released when sober charged with 3(1)(a) of the LLCA.
