Shooting Investigation – Attempt murder charges laid – Dog found deceased – Additional charges laid

UPDATE (5/5) Additional charges laid 

Through consultation with Forensic Veterinarian Services,  the cause of death of the deceased dog found at the crime scene of the attempted murder incident which originally began on May 16th, 2023 has been confirmed to be by gun-shot. As a result, 40 year old James Brown has been charged with one count of Killing or Injuring an Animal. Brown appeared before the courts this morning and remains in custody. ST23008296

UPDATE (4/4) Dog found deceased 

While processing the crime scene, forensic investigators have located a deceased dog within the apartment.

The dog is suspected to have suffered gun-shot wounds. St. Thomas Police will liaise with Forensic Veterinarian Services to assist in the determination of the cause of death.

Police remain on scene as they continue their investigation and gather evidence.

UPDATE (3/3) Attempt murder charges laid in Intimate Partner Violence occurrence

Charges have been laid in relation to a shooting investigation that began on Tuesday May 16th 2023.

Officers arrived and found that a 24 year old female victim had been shot. Our officers took immediate action and ensured that the life of the young victim was preserved.  The victim was transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

It was learned early in the investigation that the victim and her partner – accused were involved in an altercation earlier in the afternoon.  That situation deteriorated to the point where the suspect shot the victim and fled the residence.

STPS officers located the suspect nearby.  He was immediately arrested and found to be in possession of a loaded firearm.

The victim remains in hospital with life threatening injuries.

As a result, a 39 year old James Alexander Brown has been charged with:

  • Attempt to Commit Murder
  • Possession of a firearm contrary to Prohibition Order
  • Possession of a loaded firearm
  • Carrying a concealed weapon

The accused remains in custody awaiting a court appearance.

Police remain on scene, at an apartment in the 300 block of Talbot Street as they continue their investigation.

Police maintain there is no risk to public safety.

St. Thomas, ON (May 16th, 2023) 

UPDATE (2/3) – Members of the St. Thomas Police Service are investigating a shooting that took place in the 300 block of Talbot Street, this afternoon.

On Tuesday May 16th, shortly after 4:30 p.m. police received multiple 9-1-1 calls in relation to disturbance at a residence. Upon arrival, a 24 year old victim was located, with an apparent gunshot wound.

The victim was transported to hospital by EMS with life threatening injuries.

The suspect, a 39 year old St. Thomas resident fled the area on foot prior to police arrival, but was located and apprehended on Hiawatha Street, shortly after.

Upon arrest, the suspect was in possession of a loaded firearm.

The investigation is in its early stages and more information will be provided as it becomes available.

Police remain on scene in the area of the 300 block of Talbot Street to conduct their investigation and are asking  for the public’s assistance in avoiding the area.

Police maintain there is no risk to public safety.

Active Investigation (May 16th 2023)

This afternoon police were called to an apartment on the west end of Talbot St after a report of a disturbance in the building.   One person has been transported to hospital and another person has been taken into custody.   Police will remain on scene for several hours to investigate further.   There is no threat to public safety but St. Thomas Police would ask that individuals stay clear of the area while the investigation continues.
