Protecting Your Vehicle: Preventing Auto Theft in St. Thomas

The St. Thomas Police Service is committed to helping residents safeguard their vehicles from theft. In our latest public education and awareness campaign, we share practical tips and strategies to protect your vehicle and reduce the risk of auto theft.

The video builds on the first in our series, which highlighted how quickly a vehicle can be stolen.

Did you know? (based on our local 2024 crime analysis)

  • The most commonly stolen vehicle model is the Chevrolet Silverado.
  • The most commonly stolen vehicle brand is Kia.
  • A motor vehicle is stolen once every eight days in St. Thomas.
  • Mondays and Tuesdays are the most common days for auto theft.
  • Most thefts occur in the overnight hours.

How to Protect Your Vehicle:

  1. Lock Your Doors: Always ensure your vehicle is locked, even when parked in your driveway or a secure area.
  2. Install Security Devices: Security measures like steering wheel locks, dash cameras, and Faraday bags can deter thieves. Faraday bags block key fob signals, preventing them from being compromised.
  3. Invest in Built-In Security: When purchasing a new car or upgrading your current one, consider vehicles with built-in immobilizers that prevent unauthorized ignition.
  4. Use a Tracking System: Installing a tracking device can aid law enforcement in quickly recovering your vehicle if it’s stolen.

A Shared Responsibility Auto theft prevention requires collective effort. By implementing these measures, we can reduce vehicle thefts in our community and make St. Thomas a safer place for everyone.
