Media Release Tuesday February 27th 2024

Assault 

A 21 year old St. Thomas resident has been arrested. On Monday February 26th 2024, police received multiple 911 calls in regards to two individuals involved in a disturbance in a downtown parking lot. Upon arrival, police located the individuals and through investigation determined a verbal argument had turned physical resulting in minor injuries. As a result, the 21 year old was charged with one count of Assault and transported to police headquarters where they were processed and released on an undertaking with a future court date. A 29 year old St. Thomas resident has been arrested. On Monday February 26th 2024, officers were called to investigate the report of an individual being assaulted. Police attended the area just south of Talbot Street and located the parties involved. Through investigation, officers learned a verbal argument had turned physical. Minor injuries were sustained. As a result, the 29 year old St. Thomas resident was charged with one count Assault and one count Failure to Comply with Probation Order. The individual was transported to police headquarters where they were processed and released on an undertaking with a future court date. ST24003026

Warrant arrest 

A 29 year old St. Thomas resident has been arrested. On Monday February 26th 2024, the individual attended police headquarters to turn themselves in on an outstanding warrant with our service for Assault after an incident in January. The 29 year old was processed and released on an undertaking with a future court date. ST24003012

A 38 year old St. Thomas resident has been arrested. On Tuesday February 27th 2024, officers were dealing with individual on an unrelated matter when they became aware of an outstanding warrant with our service for one count Break and Enter stemming from an incident in January. The 38 year old was arrested and transported to police headquarters where they processed and released on an undertaking with a future court date. ST24003056

Vehicle entry

A drone and drone accessories have been reported stolen from a vehicle. On Monday February 26th 2024, the vehicle owner attended police headquarters to report the theft. It was reported that sometime in the overnight hours, their vehicle that was parked at an address on Chestnut Street had been entered and the property stolen. The value of the drone and accessories exceeds $2,500. This remains under investigation. Theft

The downspouts from the exterior of a church on Hincks Street have been reported stolen. On Monday February 26th 2024, officers were called to the church by an employee who reported that sometime after Thursday of last week and before the church service on Sunday, the downspouts had been stolen. Total value is approximately $1,000. This remains under investigation. ST24003028

Breach of probation 

A 29 year old St. Thomas resident has been charged with two counts of Breach of Probation after being identified as the person responsible in a shoplifting incident from a retail store on Talbot Street on Monday February 26th, 2024. A warrant for arrest has been requested. ST24003042

Fraud 

St. Thomas police are currently investigating an incident of fraud. On Monday February 26th 2024, officers were contacted by a local resident who reported that they were out approximately $700 after sending an e-transfer to purchase concert tickets. Police learned that after a series of messages a purchase agreement was made and the money sent. Once the money was sent, all communication seized and the victim was blocked. This remains under investigation. ST24003044

Protecting yourself from fraud

In an ongoing effort to help protect the residents of St. Thomas from falling victim to online scams and fraud, the St. Thomas Police Service would like to remind the community on ways to protect themselves and things to consider while online:

  • Always get a second opinion from family or friends regarding the situation
  • Always verify the person you are corresponding with is legitimate
  • No employer will reach out to you through apps like Whats App
  • If you receive a call from someone claiming to be a family member or relative, hang up and call the number you have for them.
  • No employer will ask you to invest your own money or purchase gift cards.
  • Use the Canadian Anti- Fraud Centreas a resource to familiarize yourself with current scams and additional ways to protect yourself
