Media Release Friday September 20th 2024

Arson 

A 41 year old St. Thomas resident has been charged with Arson after STPS were called to attend a fire with the St. Thomas Fire Department. On Thursday September 19th 2024, just before noon, police attended the area of Curtis Street and Hiawatha Street to investigate the report of a couch on fire. The fire was extinguished and no injuries were reported. Through investigation, officers located the individual responsible and took them into custody. The 41 year old was transported to police headquarters to be processed. During processing, officers learned the individual was wanted by our service on an outstanding warrant for Assault stemming from an incident in July. The individual was held to attend court. Assault

Two St. Thomas teens have been charged with Assault after police were called to a disturbance at a local park last night. On Thursday September 19th 2024, just after 8 p.m. STPS were called to a park on the southside of the city to investigate the report of an individual with injuries as the result of an altercation between a group of youth. Upon arrival, police located an individual requiring medical assistance and requested EMS to transport that person to the hospital. Through investigation, police have charged a 15 year old and 16 year old with Assault. A warrant for their arrest has been requested. ST24016915

Intimate Partner Violence 

A 30 year old St. Thomas has been arrested. On Thursday September 19th 2024, police were called to an address on the southside of the city to investigate the report of an altercation between two people known to each other. Upon arrival, police learned the victim in this matter had been physically assaulted and not allowed to leave after a verbal argument between them and the accused had escalated. As a result, a 30 year old St. Thomas resident was charged with one count of Assault and one count of Forcible Confinement. The individual was transported to police headquarters where they were processed and released on an undertaking with a future court date. ST24016909

Failure to Comply 

A 52 year old St. Thomas resident is wanted by police. On Thursday September 19th 2024, police were called to a retail store on Talbot Street for an unwanted person who had been previously trespassed. The individual had left the area prior to police arrival. Through investigation and review of the available video surveillance, the 52 year old was identified by police and subsequently charged with one count of Failure to Comply with Undertaking. A warrant for arrest has been requested. ST24016864

A 45 year old St. Thomas resident is wanted by police. On Thursday September 19th 2024, officers were notified by a remote monitoring company that the individual’s monitoring device was no longer working due to the battery not being charged.  Police attended the last known location of the individual and informed them of the need to charge their device to which they refused. As a result, the 45 year old has been charged with Failure to Comply with Release Order. A warrant for arrest has been requested. ST24016913

Mischief 

St. Thomas police are currently investigating the report of damage caused to a commercial storage shed. On Thursday September 19th 2024, officers were called to a business on First Avenue in regards to a shed on the property being damaged at some point in the overnight hours. Video surveillance of the area is being reviewed as police continue to investigate. ST24016874

Warrant Arrests

A 35 year old St. Thomas resident has been arrested. On Thursday September 19th 2024, the individual attended police headquarters to turn themselves in on an outstanding probation warrant. The individual was processed to attend court. ST24016869

A 29 year old St. Thomas resident has been arrested. On Thursday September 19th 2024, officers at the Elgin County Courthouse were dealing with the individual on an unrelated matter when they became aware of an outstanding warrant with our service stemming from an incident in July, where they had been charged with a weapons offence. The individual was processed and remanded into custody. ST24016873

A 36 year old St. Thomas resident has been arrested. On Thursday September 19th 2024, the individual attended police headquarters on an unrelated matter when attending officers became aware of an outstanding warrant with our service for Mischief in relation to an incident in August. The individual was processed and released on an appearance notice. ST24016875

Theft

St. Thomas police are currently investigating the report of a wallet being stolen. On Thursday September 19th 2024, STPS received an online report  from a local resident that their wallet had been stolen from their vehicle and their credit card used at a location in the city. It was reported that the incident occurred at some point in the overnight hours of September 14th with the card being used on the same day. This remains under investigation. ST24016891

Approximately $5,000 of tools and equipment have been reported stolen from a commercial vehicle. On Thursday September 19th 2024, police were called to investigate the incident that occurred sometime between August 26th and September 19th, while the vehicle was parked awaiting a repair at local automotive business. This remains under investigation. ST24016893

Several items of merchandise have been reported stolen from a retail store on Talbot Street. On Thursday September 19th 2024, officers were called to investigate the report of an individual, known to police and store staff,  who became argumentative in regards to the items they were attempting purchase exceeding the money the individual had available, ultimately leaving the store with all items, failing to pay.
